More Than a Paycheck: Creative Ways to Care for Your Team on a Small Budget
Rural nonprofits often do a lot with a little. So, let’s talk about creative ways to care for the people who make your work possible. Wages aren’t the only way to help your team feel valued, supported, and glad to be part of your organization.
This online conversation will be facilitated by NAWA Operations Director Jesse Tofte, and Colleen Malmassari, founder of HR consulting practice Back40. We’ll talk about stretching your resources in ways that positively impact the people on your team. We’ll explore low-cost and no-cost ideas like flexible schedules, work-from-home options, local discounts and reciprocal memberships, and professional development support. Many of these ideas can work for your volunteers, too!
We’ll also address this important question: how do you know if what you’re trying or providing is working? We’ll examine practical ways to check in on employee well-being and see whether your efforts are making a real difference in people’s lives.
Come with your questions, your own ideas, and the realities of your community. You’ll have a chance to learn from peers who understand the rural nonprofit experience, and leave with fresh possibilities to consider.
The Rural Nonprofit Gathering is a space for rural nonprofits to gather, network, learn and share. We invite different partner organizations, professionals in their field and even the internal staff at Nonprofit Association of Washington to present emerging topics for rural communities in Washington State. This event is held free of charge and online.

Neal Mizushima
Executive Director of Nonprofit Association of Washington
Neal brings to the Nonprofit Association of Washington decades of experience in the nonprofit sector. He has a proven record of designing and implementing programs that effectively address community challenges, advocating for change at the city and state level, providing transformational learning opportunities around leadership, trauma-informed approach, change management, and equitable and inclusive practices.
In his most recent role as Director of Programs at Bellevue LifeSpring, and in the role prior as Director of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at Hopelink, Neal has focused on building the systems, policies, procedures, culture, and capacity to serve the community in the most effective and equitable ways possible. With experience in small, medium, and large nonprofits at various stages of growth, Neal is eager to work with the vast array of nonprofits that serve Washington.
While originally from California, Neal has spent nearly all of his adult life in Washington and loves the evergreen state. Neal and his family can often be found exploring the beauty of the Pacific Northwest and the specific regional foods each area has to offer. He looks forward to hearing specific recommendations from all of our partners across the state.
Jesse Tofte
Operations Director of Nonprofit Association of Washington
Jesse joined Nonprofit Association of Washington in October of 2023. He grew up in North Central Washington before moving to Seattle to attend the University of Washington. He has since spent the last two decades working in Washington nonprofits including spending time as Director of Operations at Seattle Children’s Museum and the Academy for Precision Learning. In his free time, he enjoys reading, the Seattle Sounders and volunteering at his local food bank.
